How to Feng Shui Your Home Office for Success

Take Command of Your Business and Embrace the Amazing Opportunities that come your way!

It used to be that a home office was only associated with small businesses and that the area designated to safe keeping the family dynasty was designated to the kitchen table or an abandoned corner of a forgotten room.

Thank goodness this stigma has changed from womenpreneurs to corporate leaders. Many households are carving out a nook in their home for an office, with many new homes building a (den/office) into the square footage.

As a Professionally Certified Feng Shui Consultant I still see the odd client multi-tasking their dining rooms as an office.

As we dance around the white elephant in the room I gently suggest we seek a more auspicious placement to honor the family wealth. Even though I have found some resistance I am always able to find a more suitable space to grow their abundance. It’s not very appetizing trying to digest your diner while faced with 6 months’ worth of bills that are waiting to be filed.

From a Feng Shui perspective the area of the home that you designate for your home office is one that aligns with the purpose in which you use the space. If you mainly spend time paying bills, surfing the net, or on occasion have clients in. You may wish to consider placing your office at the front of the home or in a room near to the front door. The front of the house is considered yang meaning active therefore supporting the vibration of which the space is used.

If you’re a professional writer you may find inspiration by placing your office at the back of the home with a window that frames a beautiful garden vista. Quite, tranquil yin/female energy may be the muse that moves you into creative expression. If you do not have a room with a view placing a large mirror across from your desk that reflects all your favorite things can simulate the feeling of a window while expanding your space.

Wherever the location of your office, the second most important Feng Shui consideration is the style and function of your desk. Define your needs in relationship to the size of the room keeping in mind that a small desk keeps you small. A solid desk with a large surface provides room to grow and spread your wings. Remember Feng Shui is about aligning your intentions with your physical environment. How you feel has a direct correlation to what you manifest.

The 3rd thing to consider is desk placement. I see many homes and professional offices where the desk or makeshift desk is placed facing a wall. This does not provide the opportunity for seeing the big picture, creating new ideas or inspiration, receiving and embracing abundance, new opportunist and creative expressions. The ideal placement is one that provides you a view of the door at all times which puts you in the power or command position. This placement eliminates a feeling of vulnerability while reducing the physical stress on your hips and neck from repeatedly looking over your shoulder when someone passes by. Placing your desk in the Command position gives you the opportunity to create a beautiful vignette to rest your eyes and inspire your creative juices. A window at eye level and to the side of the desk is an awesome way to bring you back to balance.

Take the time to seek the perfect chair. I was like Goldilocks when purchasing my office chair; I had to find the one that was just-right. This meant sitting in every chair in various office furniture stores until I found the one that best supports my back.

If possible place something solid at your back to provide a sense of security and protection. A window at your back may cause light to reflect off your computer screen causing eye strain and headaches. A beautiful piece of art frames you in a place of honor and respect.

If you are someone who spends a great deal of time in your office working or studying consider raising your laptop and use an external keyboard on a sliding keyboard tray to reduce the strain on your neck and shoulders. You will be amazed at how much more productive you become.office 3
