The Feng Shui Anatomy of Windows
If you are looking for a clear perspective to gain deep and meaningful insights into your life then it might be helpful to clean and open all your windows. Yes, I said it. The windows of a home represent the eyes to the soul and the voices of children, pure, innocent and free to simply be present in the moment.
Invite fresh air into your space by making sure that all windows are in proper working order and free of all external obstacles provide plenty of opportunity for a clean, clear, fresh perspective. The view from any window is important to raising one’s personal chi or depleting it which validates the value of choosing the most optimum location to live. The neighbourhood in which you choose to purchase your home not only impacts you while outside but greatly influences your emotional state of well-being while inside which is considered your sacred space. It is best if every window in your home offered you an inspiring or at the very least a pleasing and un-offensive view.
To remedy a less-than-excellent view for example the stuccoed sided of your neighbour’s house, or a line of dumpsters in the parking lot outside your condo/apartment place a hanging plant, wind-chime, mobile or hanging quartz crystal in the window to obscure the view while keeping your attention in the space. A less than excellent view out a window can rob you of your personal chi.
A good sized window provides an opportunity to raise the vibration of any space by the amount of natural light it lets into a room. Whether most of your windows are on the north side of your home or not it is important to open all window coverings during the day to infuse the space with vital sunlight. Natural sunlight balances our Serotonin and Endorphin levels and in turn makes for a happy, healthy place to be. This is especially true for people who struggle with SAD Seasonal Affective Disorder.
My rule of thumb is this “If your plants can’t thrive in your home, neither will you.”
I’ve run into a few instances where clients refuse or don’t think they “need” to open their windows because they have a band new home with a fresh air exchanger. From a Feng Shui perspective this is simply not true. Although a fresh air exchanger is a wonderful bonus to any home it does not in any way replace the much needed breeze an open window provides. A fresh air exchanger is like shallow breathing, ok for some activities but for a good dose of O2 you have to take a really good breath by inhaling deeply and exhaling fully. Everyone needs to breathe deeply to move the oxygen through their bodies. Open windows do the same for your home.
Placement
Window to Door
I would be amiss if I didn’t mention that it is less-than-excellent to have a window installed directly across from the front door. Now I realize that many open concept homes this is often the case. But don’t despair there is always an appropriate Feng Shui design remedy for such situations. Send me private massage here and I’ll help you choose a remedy that suits your design style.
The reason that this placement is less than optimal is based on the fact that windows like mirrors draw your attention and act like a vortex or portal pulling energy into it. Therefore, this placement quickens the chi drawing it back out of your home, while reducing its ability to nurture the space.
Size Front to Back
Ideally each room should have at least one good sized window to allow natural light to raise the energy. It is best when the windows are installed at a height that is easily viewed through for the shortest member of the house hold.
Windows that are too high and too short create a narrow point of view. Folks residing in houses or rooms will be limited from seeing the big picture and may miss amazing opportunities for growth.
Windows are a sought after feature in the purchase and build of homes. The bigger the better is a growing trend. Apparently size does matter. When keeping in mind that Feng Shui always considered safety and security imperative it is best to make sure that all front facing windows are covered during the evening and into the night to provide privacy. Floor to ceiling windows are best avoided to ensure privacy and safety.
I personally love large windows at the back of the house as I thrive best when I am in communion with nature. Being that we have a stunning back yard and although facing north the 6 foot window over our kitchen sink infused the room with natural light and raises my spirits. I love nothing more than seeing our personal oasis when preparing meals and doing dishes. Sigh…
If you have a private back yard and live in a safe neighbourhood you may wish to have more expansive windows that provide an opportunity for divine inspiration.
Side
On narrow lots where the houses are close together it is best Feng Shui practice not to have windows on the sides of the house, but rather on the front and back sides which provide more expansive views. Side windows in houses on narrow lots not only have uninspiring and unsightly views they diminish the amount of natural light entering the associated rooms.
Folks residing in houses or rooms with side windows may have issues with depth perception and limited foresight of possible challenges resulting in not being prepared to take purposeful action to avoid potential hardship.
Opening
If at all possible it is best that each room has a window that opens out and wide to provide a breath of fresh chi.
Casement windows are best at providing an ample opening and secured screens. Double pain or triple pain needs will depend on your geographical location.
Awning windows are less-than-excellent as they do not provide enough room to safety make a quick escape in case of a fire or other traumatic experience.
Vertical Sliding windows are less than optimal as they have a feeling of a guillotine causing harm should the window accidental slide closed. Aesthetically they resemble droopy sleepy eyes and may result in fallen eyelid syndrome.
Horizontal Sliding windows are not the most energy efficient they do allow for ample energy flow.
Maintenance
Windows that are cracked may shatter your perception while a window that has condensation between the pains due to a broken seal may prevent you from seeing things clearly. Physical attributes may result in cataracts and other conditions obstructing ones sight.
If you find you’re struggling with a decision and feeling stuck in a place you just don’t want to be in clean and open all your windows. You will be inspired by the insights you gain and opportunities that follow.
Window casings and sills that are pealed and cracked can potentially create leaks resulting in water damage swelling the wood frame hindering proper function and protection from the weather. If the damage is too grate to repair it may be necessary to invest in new more energy efficient. Modern windows are now relatively maintenance free with safe locking systems and removable screens providing ease of regular maintenance.
Windows that are painted shut may represent chronic eye conditions such as light sensitivity, itchy and swelling eyes and clogged tear ducts.
Remove and or prune all external obstacles that may be blocking or obstructing your view such as over grown branches and out buildings such as garden and children play houses that reside on your property. A less-than-excellent view robs you of inspiration and growth.
